Sichuan Peppercorn will NUMB your Mouth – 麻辣 málà (VIDEO)

China’s Sichuan province is famous for its numbingly spicy food. We visited Chengdu, the province’s capital, to give the signature Sichuan spice (málà 麻辣) a taste test at an outdoor market. WARNING: Watching this video may cause you to lose all feeling in your mouth.

Sichuan peppercorn will seriously NUMB your mouth

We recently traveled to Chengdu and ate delicious and CHEAP street foods that were seasoned with Chengdu’s famous tingly spice. With the help of Trevor James, my friend and fellow YouTuber, we ate a TON of food, and spent hardly any money. One of our stops on this awesome food tour of Chengdu was this Sichuan peppercorn sampling. Trevor and I were only bold enough to try one peppercorn, but Curtis ate a handful and suffered the consequences.

  1. Did you think the numbing sensation was stronger with the mala in Sichuan compared to northern China or other places? I honestly didn’t think it was that bad, but it might have had to do with it being mixed in a dish or the fact I wasn’t in Sichuan. I did tend to avoid them though most of the time.

    • I couldn’t tell whether it was stronger or not. It seems that any time I take a bite out of this peppercorn, my mouth goes numb, regardless of the province or city. Thanks for watching!
