As a warm-up ESL activity, I asked my students to think of one amazing thing that they’ve done and write it down on a slip of paper. After they dropped their responses in a hat, we drew them randomly to discuss as a class, and while this was going on, it became clear to me that my students live rather unspectacular lives.
I’ll admit, while reviewing these responses with the class, it was sometimes difficult to keep a straight face, not because of students’ mistakes or English writing ability, but because of the high volume of comically innocent and unremarkable responses. I asked for ‘amazing’ and this is what I got.
I included this one because I love Jianbing Guozi.
To be totally fair, the students only had five minutes to think of something amazing they’d done, so some felt rushed. I’m sure they’ve all done things more amazing than this stuff, but even if they haven’t, I appreciate their joy in mundane things.
Before teaching in China, I taught in a high school in Thailand, and my students had some of the most interesting, bizarre and cute English nicknames I’d ever heard. If you enjoyed this post, check out my list of 24 Awesome Thai Nicknames.
