In Hanoi, Vietnam, I got a buffet breakfast, beef pho, bun cha, ice cream, Vietnemese egg coffee, sugarcane juice, four Hanoi beers, a room in a hostel, and explored the entire Old Quarter and western side of the city, all in one day – all for LESS THAN 15 DOLLARS. Seriously, this is the cheapest city I’ve ever visited.
($20 USD = 445,000 Vietnamese dong)
Here’s how I spent my money in one full day in Hanoi:
Hostel bed – 112,000 dong
Breakfast buffet – FREE (included with hostel)
Ice cream – 8,000
Egg coffee – 17,000
Beef pho – 30,000
Fried dough snack – 7,000
Temple of Literature – 30,000
Sugarcane juice – 10,000
Ho Chi Minh Complex – 40,000
Bun Cha – 35,000
Four beers @7k/beer – 28,000
TOTAL COST = 319,000 dong ($14.26 USD)
Oh, and one more thing: the egg coffee I drank in this video is seriously the best coffee I’ve ever had in my entire life. If you visit Hanoi, you MUST TRY egg coffee.

- Man, I’m just binge watching these right now. Very cool way to travel. I’d love to do this one day keep up the good work man
- Thanks to this video I stayed in Chien Hostel last year, I got the free walking tour by 2 university students who took us to the egg coffee place. I also met Tran who hooked me up with a great Ha Long Bay Cruise. He was excited when I told him I got there because of you. The stay in this hostel was perfect and they also offer Free Beer from 6-8pm.
- Oh.Chun is so lovely!I had been to Hanoi few months ago.Due to without a local guide,I spend much more than usual.Great Video!Remind me the memory of Vietnam trips.
- Egg Coffee in Hanoi is one of the greatest gift ever created, if you haven’t had one yet….my condolences
- I really enjoyed this video of Hanoi! Chien hostel is the best. You mentioned that for $5 you can get a bed and a big breakfast with plenty of coffee. But in the evenings you can also drink free beer!!! It’s the best bargain I have found in all of my travels.
- Holy cow, these are so good. Really well put together and informative, love that you are shown around by someone for most of the episode… and I thought I was a bad ass for doing this on $30 a day, lol you’re killing it. I edit my own videos as well so I know what a massive feat it is to put together 8 min videos on a regular basis, it’s not easy. Just found your channel, diving into more of your videos but loving the South East Asia ones right now.
- it was really surprised, Hanoi is very clean and as it appears on your video very less polluted and less chaotic too in comparison with other Asian cities. And incredibly cheap also
- i was and still am in Hanoi, Vietnam and I really enjoy your video! I also liked the van mieu the most – such a beautiful piece of architecture
- Love your videos bro! These are some great tips for people who want to travel on a budget! I’ll be heading to South East Asia later this year and I will definitely try to stay to a $20 budget. However, I did say ‘try’. Keep up the good work and i’ll be looking forward to your next video!!
- Old Quarter Hanoi was my favorite pace in Vietnam and on the weekends in the night they close of the streets and it is magic…people playing and lots of street performers 🙂
