Why Spartanburg Water Is Quietly One of the Best Utilities in South Carolina

Okay, I’ll be honest. Water utilities are not exactly the kind of thing I sit around thinking about on a Friday night. But after spending some time digging into what Spartanburg Water is actually doing, I kind of had to write about it. Because there’s a lot going on here that most people just don’t know about.

If you live in or around Spartanburg, South Carolina, you’ve probably turned on your tap a thousand times without thinking twice. That water just shows up. Clean, cold, ready to go. And most of us take that for granted. I did too, until I started looking into who’s actually behind it.

So, What Is Spartanburg Water?

Spartanburg Water is the public utility that handles water and sewer services for Spartanburg, SC. They’ve been at it for a long time, and they’re based right in the heart of the city at 200 Commerce Street. If you’re a resident or business owner in the area, they’re the team making sure you have safe, clean water every single day.

But here’s the thing. They’re doing a whole lot more than just sending water through pipes.

They Just Won “Best Tasting Water” in South Carolina

Yes, you read that right. Spartanburg Water’s Landrum Drinking Water Treatment Plant took home the “Best Tasting Water” award in the state at the South Carolina Environmental Conference earlier this year.

I found this genuinely surprising. We always hear about restaurants or chefs winning awards, but a water treatment plant? That’s a different kind of flex. It tells you these people care deeply about quality, not just compliance. Anyone can meet the minimum standard. Winning a taste award means you’re going above and beyond it.

Next time you pour a glass of water from your tap in Spartanburg, just remember. You’re drinking award-winning water. That’s not nothing.

They’re Giving Back to the Community in Real Ways

This is the part that really got me. Spartanburg Water has been actively funding environmental and community education programs in the area.

They recently gave a grant to the Watershed Ecology Center, which helps provide hands-on environmental education to more than 20,000 local students every year. Think about that. Twenty thousand kids getting to learn about nature, water systems, and conservation. That kind of investment shapes how an entire generation thinks about the environment.

They also gave grant support to the Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE) to help revitalize public access to the Glendale Shoals Preserve. So not only are they keeping your water clean, they’re literally helping make nature more accessible to everyone in the region.

I don’t know about you, but when I hear about a utility company doing stuff like this, it genuinely changes how I feel about paying my water bill.

The Twice the Ice Houses Are Low-Key Brilliant

Okay, this one made me laugh when I first came across it, but hear me out.

Spartanburg Water runs 12 Twice the Ice vending locations across the area. These are basically self-serve ice vending machines that sell high-quality ice made with their own treated water. It’s convenient, it’s competitively priced, and honestly, if you’ve ever bought a bag of gas station ice and wondered what’s actually in it, knowing it comes from an award-winning water source is kind of reassuring.

It’s a clever extension of their core business, and it keeps quality in-house. I thought it was a quirky little detail when I first read it, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

They Look Out for Customers Who Are Struggling

Something I really respect about Spartanburg Water is their Customer Assistance Program. If you’re going through a tough time financially and struggling to pay your water bill, they have a program in place to help. No one should lose access to clean water because of a hard stretch in life, and it’s good to see a utility company that takes that seriously.

They also support the Deterra drug disposal system, which helps residents properly get rid of unused or expired medications instead of flushing them down the drain. Most people don’t think about what happens to flushed medication since it can end up in the water supply. So helping people dispose of it safely is just smart water stewardship.

The Choose Tap Movement

Spartanburg Water also runs a Choose Tap program that encourages people to drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. Given that their water just won a statewide taste award, this feels pretty well-earned as a message.

Beyond the taste though, the environmental case for tap water is strong. Single-use plastic bottles are a real problem, and when your local tap water is genuinely high-quality, there’s really no reason to default to plastic. This program is simple, practical, and I think it deserves more attention than it gets.

Why I Think Spartanburg Water Deserves More Recognition

Look, I’m not here to tell you that utilities are exciting. But I do think that the people and organizations quietly doing good work deserve a shoutout.

Spartanburg Water is running an award-winning treatment plant, maintaining beautiful lakes, funding environmental education for thousands of kids, supporting local conservation, helping struggling customers, and promoting sustainable habits around water use. All while making sure your tap works every single morning.

That’s a lot for one organization to be doing well.

If you’re in Spartanburg, I’d genuinely encourage you to check out one of their Paddle Tours this May, look into the Choose Tap program, and just take a moment to appreciate what’s behind that glass of water you’re drinking. It’s more than you might think.
